Beyond the Birds

Today I looked past the sand, past the birds, past the waves and looked deep into the angry foolish clouds. What is on the other side? Is there a group sailing in a boat having the best time ever. Maybe a storm is a brewing over the ocean with rain drops the size of golf balls. Or maybe the sun rays that are so bright you need sunglasses in order to keep your eyes open. Do you daydream...?

Today was another great day at the beach. It was pleasant this morning, however, the weather is changing and the rain is coming. Regardless, I am there! Enjoy what I call Sand Lava. It flowed downward just like lava.

I found this "modhouse" photo online, which I call my Slinky House. Very cool and slinkyish! This is what I might have imagined to live in if we were waaaay in the future. However, the many things missing from this photo for me would be trees, plants, and lots of wildlife. And not to mention the beach or some kind of water. If I had all of that, it may be perfect!

Though I try, I'm not the best at bird identification. So I use this website to help.
I do believe that this is a Blue Heron. Near the wetlands and around town are lots of these beautiful grey birds, along with solid white egrets. This one is looking for food. I love their patience.

Life is good when you get to view these wonderful creatures on earth.

On this day, I was running around house going a million miles an hour when I heard that familar sound. I grabbed my camera and switched to video mode and captured my friend pecking. It's days like these that I get to sit back for 10 minutes or so and enjoy simple pleasures in my own backyard. Life is good.

Everybody likes sand castle fun. As I sit along the raised sand line north of the pier, there were several sand castles built by others. The artists were long gone, however, the spectators were in bunches. I saw lots of smiles and picture taking. What a nice day it was.

Last Sunday at went down to Main Street to get an ice cream. I didn’t want anything fancy…just good ole vanilla ice cream on a cone. I paid what was due and couldn’t wait to taste it. There’s something about these yummy treats that take me back to when I was a child. Life as I see it...simple, no worries really, and just fun. So now the young lady hands me my ice cream cone and off I go. The anticipation is too much that I forget to pick up some napkins and exit the building. The fist lick is always the best - besides the last you know. I sit right outside the parlor on a huge circle planter with seating, as I begin to enjoy my treat. In spite of this, my ice cream begins to melt. The warmth of cool evening air launches the start of thawing, therefore had to go get those napkins. The rest, well you get the picture, right? A simple Sunday.

This is my view way up in the sky at Torrey Pines. The day was filled with paragliders and I was one of them that day, tandem for the day. My first time ever! All I can say is that was amazing, I was joyed, wasn't scared and loved every minute of it.

We adopted him about a month ago and as you can see, he’s settled in with our family like a dream. Major is loveable, happy, and on cloud nine. I am surrounded with family & friends who have rescued too. Kudos!!

This is my mom’s hummingbird story:

Hummingbird “Diver” had to be taken to an animal sanctuary. Seems this juvenile ways were too much for me, as he kept taking off and he can't fly yet. So that means I could not let him outside for his mother to feed him. So it’s best that he goes where he is safe & feed until he is ready to spread his wings.

Yesterday the baby hummingbirds fledged! I didn't even get to see them practice flight. Now need to watch for them hanging around the trees, as Pepper will continue to feed them for a couple of weeks.

WOW! Peanut (right) and Lucy (left) are growing so fast and there is less & less room in the nest. I noticed how observant they are of they're surroundings. I am thinking that the babies are approx. 2 weeks old and if that is correct, then fledging the nest will take place in about 2 more weeks.

Well hello Peanut and Lucy! These are my two baby hummingbirds, which are precious as gems. They're growing so fast. Pepper (mother) feeds them constantly and watches over her two babies. Daily I (we) get to watch them grow. My favorite part is when she inserts her beak al the way down into theirs mouths while dropping mushy bugs and nectar. Nature is wonderful to us.

It is official!! Pepper hatched two baby hummingbirds. I've named them - Peanut & Lucy. I do not have the best view inside the nest, however, I will photograph & film constantly. It looks as though they still do not have their feathers yet, nor their eyes open. Pepper has spent alot of time sitting on them. In this video, she is off catching bugs & eating nectar that she's already processed, then feeds them. Stay tuned for more!

On the left is my husband. The father of my children. The man that is a wonderful human being. A father that is strong, kind, funny, and just a great dad.

On the right is my father-in-law. He passed away and we miss him and will never forget what a sweet grandfather and gentle man he was.

Today we brought home this handsome dog. We rescued him by adopting this 1 year old Black Labrador from a local shelter. He is a breathtaking animal, who is now a part of your family. Right now he is little groggy from the surgical procedure that was a requirement, but is coming out of it good. No sickness, not hungry....a little thirsty though. As he walks around the house, taking in all of the smells, he wags his tail as he knows that he is finally home.

At the shelter, there were two other people that wanted to adopt him, so a lottery was held. As the shelter staff folds each paper with three different names, I sit there and am already setting myself up for rejection. The staff member announces that the lottery will begin now. I can't even stand it. So many thoughts were going through my head; along with many prayers...they reach in and pull out the winner. He calls my name! Wow, he called my name and I get to adopt this amazing Labrador.

Now I sit here at home and watch "Major" walk around and try to take it all in. He is thin, yet strong, He is groggy, yet grateful. He is now neutered, yet all male. He is ours. He is our Major!

Slinky just learned something today. While Pepper has finished up her second nest, she is busy locating & feeding Buz!! It's true...Pepper is Buz's mother. I saw it with my own two eyes. Recently, Buz must have fledged another nest. I did a little web-surfing and she most likely has a egg or two while feeding her fledged chick[s].

She will press her rump into the center of the nest and against the walls to round the inside. She also uses her feet. The Flower of Remembrance - Red Poppy

As I visit my father-in-law at Riverside National Cemetery to honor him, to honor all, for Memorial Day, I look around and see much of the same around me. I snap a few photographs to remember, however, no words can describe the ache in ones heart. So here is poem called In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. This was the poem written by World War I Colonel John McCrae, a surgeon with Canada's First Brigade Artillery. It expressed McCrae's grief over the "row on row" of graves of soldiers who had died on Flanders' battlefields, located in a region of western Belgium and northern France. The poem presented a striking image of the bright red flowers blooming among the rows of white crosses and became a rallying cry to all who fought in the First World War. The first printed version of it reportedly was in December 1915, in the British magazine Punch.

Nest Update

NEST UPDATE: It looks like the nest is close to being done. I believe that in about 16 days that the eggs will be laid. Pepper (mama) is working hard to finish up the nest. I stand on my porch and try to blend in with the plants so I can watch her. I am also trying to figure out how to get photos inside the nest without upseting Pepper. This is beyond exciting!! Lots of pics to follow within the next two months....

I am happily to announce that I will be video taping and taking photographs of a new hummingbird nest in my tree. This is not the same nest as last time, which is about a foot away. This mother hummingbird looks smaller than the last one and she is just starting to build her nest. Not sure if it's Bonnie that left the nest back in March. Does anyone know how soon after leaving the nest, they can reproduce?

On my photo quest on Saturday, I came across van Gogh...well van Gogh the pooch! The lady explained that she adopted this abused K9. And yes, he only has one ear due to the abuse he endured. She said that he might bite but as you can see I got down to his level and chatted with him for a while. He rolled around and rubbed his nose in the grass. Nice meeting you van Gogh!
